Yuyuan Garden
Yuyuan Garden is a famous classical garden located on Anren Jie, Shanghai with a name that means pleasing and satisfying. Despite its small size of about five acres, it is packed full of exciting attractions. The pavilions, halls, rock gardens and ponds are each unique. There are six main scenic areas in the garden: Sansui Hall, Wanhua Chamber, Dianchun Hall, Huijing Hall, Yuhua Hall and the Inner Garden. Each area features several scenic spots.

Near the entrance is a rock garden called the Great Rockery that reaches a height of about 50 feet. This is the oldest and largest rockery south of the Yangtze River. The top provides a great view of the garden especially of Cuixiu Hall which sits at the foot of the rockery. Cuixiu Hall is an elegant place filled with old trees and beautiful blooming flowers. There are also several curio shops.

The true appeal of Yuyuan Garden lies in the Exquisite Jade Rock, which is located across from Yuhua Hall. It is one of three most famous rocks in the southern region of the Yangtze River. (The other two are Duanyun Feng in Suzhou and Zhouyun Feng in Hangzhou.) The rock is about 10.8 feet in height and has 72 holes. What is interesting about this rock is that if you start a fire at the foot of the rock, the smoke will magically float out from all the holes. If you pour water from the top, it will flow out from all the holes creating a spectacular sight to witness.

The Inner Garden, built in 1709, was independent of the rest of Yuyuan garden and was joined later. The Inner Garden is small but exquisite with rocks, pavilions, ornamental ponds and flower walls offering some of the most attractive sceneries in the garden.
