Highlights: Shoton Festival (August) It is one of the major festivals in Tibet, also known as the Tibetan Opera Festival. The founder of the Gelugpa (Yellow Sect of Buddhism), Tsongkhapa set the rule that Buddhists can cultivate themselves only indoor in summer, to avoid killing other creatures carelessly. Because creatures are most active in summer. This rule must be carried out till the seventh lunar month. Then Buddhists go outdoor, accept yoghurt served by local peopel, and have fun. Since the middle of 17th century, the Fifth Dalai Lama added opera performance to this festival. Famous Tibetan opera troupes perform in Norbulingka (Dalai Lama"s summer palace). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Itinerary Aug 10th: Chengdu - Lhasa Depart from Chengdu, meet and transfer to Chengdu Shuangliu airport. Arrive at Lhasa Gonggar airport which is at a elevation of 3000 meters, drive to Lhasa urban, en route visit Brahmaputra valley, Buddha Sculpture made 11th century and Tibetan village etc. on the drive to Lhasa, having a short while rest to adapt with the circumstance after lunch, and shopping along Lhasa street evening, transfer to Tianyujiaotong hotel. (No guide on the Chengdu to Lhasa flight, the Tibetan guide will pick you up at Lhasa airport) Aug 11th: Potala & Jokhang Monastery Full day guided sightseeing, visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Monastery which is famed as the holy place for Tibet Mandala, and souvenir shopping in Barkhor Street and photographing along Lhasa river side, later transfer to hotel. Aug 12th : Join the Shoton festival.overnight in Lhasa Today will be the first day of Shoton Festival, in the past, this festival was a purely religious celebration, later in the rule of 5th Dalai Lama, this festival was open a little to some people with high social status, with time going on, this festival becomes a common public celebration held in Drepung monastery first, then move to Norbulinka palace. In the morning of this day, early visit to Drepung monastery to join the grand opening ceremony -- Sunning the Tangkha (a huge woven hangings ), this ceremony marks the official set-off of this festival. In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery. Aug 13th: Shigatse & Yamdrok Lake Drive to Shigatse, en route visit Yamdrok Lake, Korala Glaciers, Kumbuk Monastery, Khumbum stupa and the Palkor Chode Monastery and Gyantse etc. transfer to Shigatse Shandong hotel. Aug 14th: Shakya Monastery Drive to Dhingri, en route visit Shakya Monastery, which famed as "The Tibet Louvre Aug 15th: Rhongbuk Monastery Dive to Rhongbuk Monastery, and end tour with the spectacular view of Mt. Everest. Overnight in base camp Aug 16th: Back Shigatse Back to Shigatse, transfer to Shangdong hotel Aug 17th:Tashilhunpo Monastery Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, Shigatse fair, after lunch visit the Lhokar - the Tibetan granary and see the local life, back Lhasa and transfer to hotel.
