Yichang
Located in the west of Hubei, on juncture of the middle- upper reaches of the Changjiang River, Yichang, which was called Yiling in ancient time, has a history of over 2400 years. The city covers an area of 21,000 square kms, with a population of 4.15 million. It is a national-level Excellent Tourism City, Civilized City.

Yichang is very rich in natural resources, especially hydroelectric resources. The hydro energy likely to be exploited amounts to as high as 25 million kilowatts, which accounts for 99% of tile total amount of Hubei Province. The first dam of the great Changjiang River, Gezhouba Project, the well-known Three Gorges Project settle in the urban area of Yichang. Thus it is honored as "Hydropower Capital of the World." Yichang has a convenient transportation. The golden waterway of the Yangtze River, 318 National Highway and Yihuang Expressway, the special purpose highway for Three Gorges Project, Jiaoliu Railway, Three Gorges Airport together constitute a three-dimensional transportation network. The perfect investment environment has attracted investments from many enterprises with well-known brands such as HuiYuan of Beijing, Haier and Aucma of Qingdao and Junyao of Zhejiang.

Yichang, which has a long history, is one of the key tourism cities in China. The splendid Three Gorges has long been an attraction in China for its magnificence, elegance, marvellousness and perilousness. The gorges, mountains, caves and waters in Yichang make the city a charming place for tourists. There are over 600 sites with various tourism resources, 3 of which are at world-level, and 30 national-level. The Three Gorges and Gezhouba Project are awarded the title of "Chinaˇ®s 40 Best Tourist Spots," Tanzi Ridge Tourist Spot of the Three Gorges Project is one of the first AAAA level scenic spots. Yichang was approved as an open city along the Yangtze River by the State Council in 1994.

The Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project, which is located towards the end of the Xiling Gorge, is another impressive landmark. It was built in 1988 and is the largest water conservancy project in the country. It is known for the vigorous gushes of water which fall amidst the beautiful surrounding landscape when the sluice is opened.

There are also many scenic landmarks around the Three Gorges area. Xiling Gorge is the longest of the three gorges. It is divided into four parts, marking specific areas that the Yangtze River turbulently passes through. Sailing down the Yangtze River, visitors can see beautiful scenery along both river banks. Zhaojun Hometown and Qu Yuan Hometown are on the north bank of the river. Between Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam, there is a particularly beautiful area - Sanxia Ren Jia (Three Gorges Families), where visitors can enjoy scenery while having a taste of local life.

One branch of the Yangtze River, Qingjiang, is refered to as the ˇ®bright pearlˇ®. It is the mother river of the Tujia People, an area which acts as a receptacle for the water that the Yangtze empties into it. The Qingjiang River Corridor, named Qingjiang Hundred Islands Lake in the past, was rebuilt in 2005 and includes all the scenic spots from Geheyan Dam to Shuibuya Salt Pond Hot Spring. Visitors can take a yacht from Geheyan Port to view the scenery on both sides of the river, including Wuluo Zhongli Mountain, Qingjiang Buddha, Tianzhu Mountain Scenery Area and Hundred Islands Lake.

The area around Yichang City is highly forested, which creates many beautiful scenic areas in and around the city. Chexi Tujia Scenic Area, to the west of Yichang City, is an area where natural beauty and the folk custom of Tujia People have merged, creating a fascinating destination. Sixi River Scenic Area, located in the southeastern portion of Zigui County, Yichang, is an area centered on the rivers. Some other attractive natural areas include Yuquan Temple Scenic Area and Dalaoling National Forest Park.

For visitors who want to look get to know Yichang City, Chinese Sturgeon Museum gives an introduction to fossils which have lived on earth for 140 million years; Sanxia Fengqing Island, neighboring the museum, is a theme park with a view of Three Gorges.
