Guilin Reed Flute Cave
The Ludi (Bamboo-Pipe) Cave on the northwestern outskirts of Guilin, seven kilometers from the city center, is a limestone cave in existence for at least 600,000 years. The entire cave is 240 meters deep, 93 meters at the widest section and 18 meters at the highest point. The whole tour route is 500 meters long, following a zigzagging and intricate passage. Most of the sights are concentrated near the entrance of the cave. The most unusual formations in the cave are those shaped like curtains with a round top, which glitter in the lights due to the sodium carbonate in the limestone. One section in the middle of the cave is as specious as a great hall. With stalactites and stalagmites set on all sides, it looks as gorgeous as a crystal palace. Preserved in the cave are 77 inscriptions penned on the rocks since the time of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Some of them are more than 1,100 years old, but the ink marks are still clearly decipherable.
In fact, the stalactites with various appearances come from millions of yearsˇ® accumulation of calcium carbonate dissolved in rock by underground water. The Reed Flute Cave is praised as an art palace of nature. Since Chinaˇ®s opening its door to the world, many leaders of China and foreign countries have come to visit reed flute cave, including Deng Xiaoping, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, American former president Nixon, Carter, Bush and so on.
In December 2000 reed flute cave was first graded by the nation as Grade AAAA(top grade) scenic spot.
