Seventy kilometers east of Bailong City, past Shankou Town in Hepu County, Yingluo Harbour sits on an inlet of the sea, right across Anpu Harbour of Guangdong Province. It is in this vast expanse of water that the world??s second largest submarine forest is found. From the seashore you can see the thick forests of mangroves on the tidal land. They seem to mirror the windbreak tree belts planted along the shore. The submarine forest, covering 333 hectares, consists of dense thickets of mangroves trees that grow only on tidal land; it is called ?? red forest?? in Chinese. You can actually walk into the mangrove forest when the tide retreats. The trees are rather grotesque in shape, with giant aerial roots that resemble animal claws digging deep into the seabed. As the tide rises, the tree trunks are submerged in water, leaving only the treetops visible. At such times, you can have an unusual experience??boating among the trees. And every now and then, you can hear cracking sounds from within the groves. With each crack, a sapling falls from a treetop and become a new tree-the mangrove??s unique style of self-propagation.
